Children’s Activity 62: Guess the Object

An Indoor Play Activity

Here’s a game sure to intrigue kids of all ages.

Materials Required:

  • Common objects of different materials
  • Opaque plastic container with lid

Instructions:

Here’s a game sure to intrigue kids of all ages.

Collect four or five objects (more for older kids) made out of various materials.

For example, choose something made out of hard plastic(such as a ping-pong ball), something made out of wood (a block), a metal object (a toy car), a soft object (a stuffed animal), and finally, something made out of cardboard (a small box).

Show these objects to your child, and let him or her touch and explore them.

Then have your child turn around.

Place one of the objects in an opaque plastic container with a lid; remove the rest from view. Make sure there’s enough room for the object to move around freely in the container. Now let the child shake the container and rattle the object.

Ask him or her to try and guess the object based on the sound.

Once your kids get good at this game, you can try placing more than one object in the container at a time, or have them race against the clock to identify an object.

One of the nice features of this activity is that you can really never run out of new objects to play with – just about anything of the right size is fair game.
