Children’s Activity 59: Green Hair

An Indoor Play Activity

Here’s an activity in which you and your child can create people and animal faces with “hair” that grows.

Materials Required:

  • Paper or Styrofoam cups
  • Markers or crayons
  • Grass seed
  • Soil
  • Safety scissors

Instructions:

Here’s an activity in which you and your child can create people and animal faces with “hair” that grows. Actually, it’s grass; it works like this.

Provide your child with used Styrofoam or white paper cups.

Have your child draw animal or human faces on them with crayons or markers.

You might also provide pieces of cork or felt that can be glued onto the cups to make facial features, ears, beards, etc. (anything except hair).

Fill the cups with potting soil and sprinkle the top with a layer of grass seed, which can be purchased from your local garden store.

Moisten the dirt and place the cups in a moist area.

Make sure the soil doesn’t dry out.

Within a week or two, your child’s cup face will begin to sprout delicate strands of green hair, which will eventually become thick shocks in need of a trim job.

Under your supervision, your child can then switch from gardener to hairdresser, cutting and trimming as he or she sees fit (with safety scissors, of course).
