An Indoor Play Activity
This activity uses light to demonstrate how colors are made from the three primary colors.
Materials Required:
- One or more flashlights
- 3 balloons (red, yellow, blue)
Optional Materials:
- Paper bag
Instructions:
Most kids find colors fascinating. This activity uses light to demonstrate how colors are made from the three primary colors.
You’ll have to sacrifice three balloons – a red, a yellow, and a blue. (Keep balloons out of young children’s hands.)
Stretch the balloon material over a flashlight and hold it in place with a rubber band.
Then, in a darkened room, have your child shine the flashlight on the wall or ceiling.
By adding different balloon “filters,” you can make a variety of secondary colors. (Blue + yellow = green; red + blue = purple; red + yellow = orange.)
If you have several flashlights, you can place one of the primary color balloons over each one, and do the mixing on the wall or ceiling.
A variation on this theme entails using three flashlights with balloon “filters” (one for each primary color), and holding them inside a good-sized paper bag with holes cut in the bottom.
This is easiest if you and your child each hold a flashlight within the bag.
Aim the holes at the ceiling and move the flashlights inside – you’ll create a rainbow-like dance of light and colors guaranteed to delight and amuse.
