Children’s Activity 27: Doorknob Hangers

An Arts and Crafts Activity

Older kids are always looking for a way to add a personal flair to their surroundings. How about a customized doorknob hanger?

Materials Required:

  • Lightweight cardboard
  • Crayons, pens, or markers
  • Scissors (for adult use only)

Instructions:

Older kids are always looking for a way to add a personal flair to their surroundings. How about a customized doorknob hanger, with a design and message uniquely suited to your kid?

All you need is a sheet of whitish cardboard (lighter is easier to cut).

The basic shape is simple: a rectangle with a circular hole near the top large enough to slip over the outside knob of your kid’s bedroom.

You can handle all the sharp stuff, then pass along the finished blank for your kid to go to work on.

Supply crayons, markers, and anything else that seems likely to aid the creative process – then watch what happens.

Any number of intriguing (or bizarre) messages/images may result. Our friends with kids told us of signs that read: RED SOX FANS ONLY; GENIUS AT WORK; DISASTER AREA; NUCLEAR-FREE ZONE; and even YES, I AM REALLY DOING MY HOMEWORK.

For our part, we tried making one that said MAID SERVICE, PLEASE, and hung it, rather optimistically, on our bedroom door. It hasn’t worked…. yet!
