Childrens Activity 17: Crayon Rubbings

An Arts and Crafts Activity.

Turn hundreds of common household items into fine art.

Materials Required:

  • Coins or Keys
  • Paper
  • Crayons
  • Other textured items as required

Instructions:

If you have a quarter, a key, a bottle top, or any of hundreds of other common household items, you have access to a treasure trove that can be turned into fine art.

Peel off the paper from a few crayons.

Then place various coins underneath a sheet of blank paper.

Rub the crayon over the surface of the coin, and hey presto, you have a rubbing of the coin.

You can keep it as a picture or cut out the rubbings for use with the Kiddie Bank activity or in other games that involve currency.

You might want to mount the coin rubbings on pieces of cardboard with double stick tape so they’ll wear better. Keys also work well – you and your child can rub a set of keys and then mount them on cardboard for use with a play dashboard, or for playing house.

Don’t stop with your pockets, though – your child can make rubbings of just about anything that has texture and fits under a sheet of paper. (Patterned floor tiles are great!) Just keep your credit cards out of sight.
