Most anyone can drink a glass of water, make a bowl of cereal, or tie shoelaces. But how about writing detailed instructions for others to follow on how to carry out such tasks?

For small kids, you can take dictation on such matters as how to stack blocks, open an envelope, or close a door.

Then try reading the instructions back – and see if your child actually completes the task in question when following the instructions to the letter.

“Put the shoes in the closet.” may seem like a pretty clear command, but if the closet door is closed your child should probably give instructions on turning the knob, opening the door, turning on the closet light, etcetera.

Older kids can try describing advanced tasks like jumping rope or making a paper airplane.

How about explaining how you tie your shoes?

That’s a very tough one – try it yourself!

Instruction Manual is an Indoor Play activity that is both fun and educational. Don’t be surprised if you start seeing your child responding to responsibilities they have in a whole new way.
