Children’s Activity 90: International News

An Indoor Play Activity

Even if your child can’t read or write, here’s an activity that will provide both entertainment and information about other cultures.

Materials Required:

  • Paper
  • Pens, crayons, or markers

Optional Materials:

  • Notebook
  • Picture of the globe

Instructions:

Even if your child can’t read or write, here’s an activity that will provide both entertainment and information about other cultures.

On a sheet of scratch paper, write the name of a COuntry followed by the words “Times” and “News,” as in Japan Times or Japan News.

Now work on some “articles” with your child.

First ask what your child knows about Japan – the language, food, where it’s located on the map, etc.

Then write a few sentences about each topic.

If you can find a sample of Japanese writing, let your child imitate it.

And be sure to affix any pictures relating to the country you might find in magazines. (Note: You don’t have to become an expert on the countries in question – just a few general facts will get you going. If you really get into the activity, a good almanac or a travel guide on the featured countries will give you lots to talk about with your child.)

As you create more newspapers for different countries, combine them in a notebook: Find a picture of a globe you can put on the cover, and you’ll have the world in your play room.

International News is an Indoor Play activity that will you and your children will find both entertaining and educational and great for improving your general knowledge.
