Why Study to Baroque Music?

After much sound research, studying in silence is no longer recognized as being effective. In a silent studying situation, the heartbeat increases, body tension increases, and concentration levels fall due to an increased nervous state.

However researchers have found that when studying to quiet, sixty-beat-per-minute baroque music, blood pressure lowers, heartbeat slows to a healthy rhythm and the right and left hemispheres of the brain become synchronized. The music produces a powerful form of alert relaxation, a state in which the body functions more efficiently on less energy, leaving more energy available for the brain. In fact, according to the Center for New Discoveries in Learning, learning potential can be increased by a minimum of five times by studying to this baroque music.

Here are some tips to help you maximize your study time.

1. Be Organized: Keep your notes in order. Head up every page with the date, course number, topic and subtopic. This will make revision more straight forward, and if you are absent for a class, identifying what material you need to obtain will be much easier.

2. Take Regular Breaks.: The average young adult can only concentrate well for 40 minutes at a time. Try having 40 minute study sessions with 10 minute breaks, followed by 5 minute recap sessions. Remember to be disciplined about your breaks as the longer you make the breaks, the harder it is to get started again.

3. Effective Note-Taking: At the end of each page, chapter, or video, make brief written summaries of the key points the author has raised. You may find that using a range of bright colors will make the notes more attractive to the eye and easier to read.

4. Regular Recall: To get good at any activity you must practice, and studying is no exception. Make sure you regularly revise important information so when it comes to exam time, you're revising information, not relearning it. Try reviewing key notes once every fortnight.
